Book ten opens with Marcus Aurelius asking himself a plain, almost embarrassing question: will he ever actually become the person he keeps trying to be. Derren Brown reads that opening cry as the most honest moment in the whole book, then follows Marcus through the daily instructions that follow it, including a maxim against complaining that Brown recognizes uncomfortably well from his own life on tour. Along the way he tests something that keeps bothering readers of the Stoics: whether accepting your fate is really just another word for giving up.
