One in the morning in James Joyce's Ulysses, a cabman's shelter under the railway at Butt Bridge, and a man who has never been further than Holyhead planning a voyage. Eumaeus, the sixteenth episode, finds Leopold Bloom drafting schemes, and Philip Kitcher reads every one of them as a message to Molly. There is a sea trip to London, a summer concert tour of the English coast, a photograph from a pocket, and then an idea Bloom cannot say plainly, even to himself. Kitcher follows that idea to its shape, and then out into the street, where Stephen sings and the two men begin, at last, to sound like company.
