Derren Brown on Meditations

Derren Brown returns to the very end of Book Eleven, where Marcus Aurelius closes with Socrates one last time. Brown traces Socrates from an odd, likable trickster the Stoics still measure themselves against, into a disputed line about a Christian revolt against death that he suspects nobody actually wrote, and lands in his own Pentecostal congregation, listening for a quiet he never quite found there. Then Marcus poses a strange, simple question, one Brown reads through Schopenhauer, and the two of them start to ask what public opinion is actually made of, and why it frightens us at all.
