A funeral carriage rolls out of Sandymount with four men inside, and one of them is Leopold Bloom. Hades, the sixth episode of James Joyce's Ulysses, is usually read as Bloom among his fellow Dubliners; Philip Kitcher reads it as the hour when Dublin's men show him what he is to them. He gives the arrangement a name, Boys' Club Morality, and then watches it work: in who gets called by his first name, in a joke Bloom never gets to finish, and in what two mourners at Glasnevin say about his wife once they've placed him. So what is Bloom doing in that carriage at all?
