Lena Dunham on Forster's A Room with a View

This is a story about a good girl in every sense. And it would be a terribly boring book if she remained perfectly so for the duration.

Film 2 · A Murder in the Piazza Dunham walks through the cast of the first four chapters, from the prim cousin to the eager clergyman, and the murder that ends Lucy's holiday.

Who

Lena Dunham is a writer, director, and actor, the creator of Girls, and a reader before any of it. She first read A Room with a View as a teenager and has gone back to it for twenty years.

The book

Forster’s funniest novel and his most dangerous: a dutiful English girl goes to Florence, watches a man die in the piazza, and comes home to choose between the fiancé everyone approves of and the one who makes her feel alive.

What you’ll come away with

A way to read Lucy’s choice as your own: which of your loves are sanctioned and deadening, which are frightening and true, and what a brush with death does to the difference.
