Paul Guyer on A Kant Primer

Immanuel Kant has a reputation as the philosopher who removed feeling from morality. Paul Guyer thinks the record says otherwise: there is one feeling Kant cannot do without, and he called it respect. This episode follows that feeling across three books, from a bare sentence in the Groundwork to a chapter of its own in the Critique of Practical Reason, where it acquires a real phenomenology, to the natural endowments Kant says we must all have. Then Guyer reads the fine print and finds two of those books making claims that cannot both be true. Deciding between them hinges on the people who feel nothing at all.
