The Slow Burn

Featuring Sadie Stein

Audio episode · 20 min

Sadie Stein on Pride and Prejudice

The last episode. Sadie Stein ends where the argument was always heading: a book whose working title was First Impressions, and whose deepest loyalty is to the slow burn, the wager that you should know someone before you love them. Chapters fifty-seven through sixty-one: Mr. Collins sends his worst-timed letter, Mr. Bennet makes his worst-timed joke, and Darcy tries again. Stein names the two scenes that undo her; one you will guess, the other you may not. She has read the book as a romantic child and as an unsentimental adult, and she leaves you her best reason to read it now. It has nothing to do with the wedding.
