Paul Guyer on A Kant Primer

Immanuel Kant said that everything reason wants comes down to three questions, and he saved the strangest for last: what may I hope? Paul Guyer traces Kant's answer to a rule of logic three words long, one Kant lifted from his own textbooks and then ran in the opposite direction, until hope stops being a wish and becomes an entitlement. There is a virtuous atheist in these pages, and a sentence about God that Guyer reads twice, because one translation of it is his. And at the end comes the question every reader eventually wants to put to him, and Guyer answers it without flinching.
