The Saint Has Not Heard

Featuring Clancy Martin

Audio episode · 17 min

Clancy Martin on Thus Spoke Zarathustra

Deep in a forest, an old hermit sings to his God, and as far as he knows, the God is doing fine. Zarathustra, down from his mountain after ten years, meets the saint first, likes him, and leaves without breaking the news. Why? Martin reads the Prologue's opening through a sentence you have heard your whole life, a three-word report he first met as a boy through a pop song on the radio. He hears it as a diagnosis of a whole culture, and the patient is us. Where that diagnosis leaves our own moment is the last thing he tells you, and it stays with you.
